What a Weekend!

Ladies and Gentlemen… enjoy your extra long weekend!  That gives you four full days to relax, read, and think about how we can make the next few weeks until the March Break, our best yet in Room 13.

I have sent home today, a letter explaining a story telling assignment that we will be doing before the break.  By Tuesday the 21st, each student will need to have a title of a story, fairy tale, legend that they will be retelling to the class beginning on March 5th.  If you ahve any questions that aren’t already answered on the information sheet that I have sent home, please don’t hesitate to give me a call, ar send me a quick email.

For those parents who have already returned the potluck form (found at the bottom of the last newsletter) and the ‘I have received y child’s report card’ section; I thank you!

For those who have yet to do that… please, as soon as you can!

Enjoy your long weekend, and extra time you have to spend with family on this Family Day weekend.

See you all back here, safe, and well read, on Tuesday.

Tomorrow!

In case you haven’t already figured it out…. Tomorrow is indeed a PA Day for staff at Century.  Enjoy the long weekend, but remember that you have homework!  You all need to read for at least 15 minutes every day!

See you on Monday… be safe, happy and productive!

Today…

We Skate!

SNOW DAY!!!

Yipee! It’s a snow day.  I hope that all of you who stayed at home are going to take advantage of the day, and read lots, and maybe play an educational game on the internet.  You know where to find them on the side bar of our Blog.

Given that three parents have already come in to ask if there is a Spelling Bee today, I thought it best to update the Blog and let you all know… that we won’t be having the Bee today.  If it is not a snow tomorrow, we will hold it then, if it is… we’ll figure something out.

As far as skating goes… we’ll see what the weather is like later in the day.  I’ll make the call by noon, so if you are reading this, and I haven’t talked to you already, please call the school to find out whether or not we will be skating before you head to school to help.

Skating Today…

I think I should let all the parents know, possibly before your children tell you when they get home, that we didn’t go skating to day.  There are a number of reasons why we didn’t go.  The first reason we cancelled skating was lack of parent volunteers between Ms. Knelson’s class and ours.  It is my understanding that a couple of parents showed up at the last minute, and for that I thank you, and on behalf of both classes I appologise for dragging you out to school, and then not going skating.  I truly hope it wasn’t too much of an inconvenience.

The second, and more prevelent reason we didn’t go skating was because of the behaviour iof many of our students in class today with Mr. Thompson.  Many discrespectful behaviours were seen from many of the kids.  Because of this, all the teacher’s involved decided to cancel skating.

I hope we will not have to do this again.  Better behaviour, and notes from parents will enable us to skate the remaining three times in the new year.

Please check the ‘important dates’ page for all the remaining skating dates.

Thanks again to the parents who showed up today.  I hope to see you soon, and actually skate with you the next time!

Mr. Aubrey

Important Papers Coming Home

This afternoon, your child is bringing home many important pieces of paper.  Please look in school bags, and retrieve a manila envelope filled with lots of goodies.

First of all, you will find the Progress Report.  Please read it over, and return the bottom portion of the second page.

Second, you will find a Parent Teacher Interview form with an allocated time set for your interview.  If you can make the time, great, I will see you then.  If I have booked you into a time that does not fit your schedule, please let me know that too, and we can try to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Thirdly, you will find a Student Verification Report.  This form includes all the necessary contact information for you and your children.  Please look over the form carefully and make any changes that need to be made, and return it to the school as soon as possible, preferably by the end of next week at the latest.  If there are no changes that need to be made, please sign the bottom of the form, and return it unchanged.

Last, but not least, you will find Century’s November newsletter.  Tucked inside the newsletter, you will find an order form for Century clothing.  If you would like to purchase some ‘Century wear’ please fill out the form and return it to school with payment.  Know that some families with multiple students at Century will not be  receiving this newsletter from your grade 2/3 student, but from another child in a different grade.

It would be really nice to have all these forms in before interviews begin next Thursday.  If you have any questions about the forms, please email me, or give me a call at the school.

Enjoy reading your kid’s Progress Report.  I look forward to seeing you all next week to discuss, in person, your child’s progress.

Mr. Aubrey.

“Imagine” a Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday.

We are having a Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday.  We will start our ceremony at 11:00 a.m.  All our welcome to come.

The kids in our class are performing John Lennon’s Imagine.  Please go over the words so that we will all know them for our presentation on Friday.  We have been practicing along with ‘Connie Talbot’ of Britain’s Got Talent’ fame.  If you’d like to google her, and sing along, that would be great.  If not, please find the lyrics belong and read them over a few times before Friday.

Imagine

By John Lennon

Imagine there’s no Heaven:

            (It’s easy if you try.)

            Nothing below us;

            Above us only sky.

            Imagine all the people

            Living for today…

            Imagine there’s no countries:

            (It isn’t hard to do.)

            Nothing to kill or die for;

            And no religion, too.

            Imagine all the people

            Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer,

But I’m not the only one.

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will be as one.

Imagine no possessions:

            (I wonder if you can?)

No need for greed or hunger

            In a brotherhood of man.

            Imagine all the people

            Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer,

But I’m not the only one.

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will live as one.

Please Have This Conversation….

Dear Parents,

We have had, in the past few weeks a growing concern about appropriate behaviour on the school yard.  Respectful behaviour is a necessary part of being a student here at Century PS.  Mr Thompson, our Vice Principal, came into our classroom this morning and talked to us about  how to behave if someone does something that bothers you.  Mr. Thompson talked about resiliency, and what that means to us.  As a class, with Mr. Thompson’s help, we came up with a class definition of sorts for the term ‘resiliency’; to bounce back in the face of adversity.  We have been asked by Mr. Thompson to have this discussion at home so that we will not find it necessary to have the discussion with certain parents and students at school.

Should you need any more clarification, or have any questions about this, please feel free to get in touch with me.

On a much happier note… we are going skating tomorrow.  We will leave the school at about 12:20.  We look forward to having lots of volunteers to help tie skates to make the day more enjoyable for all of us.

I have sent a form  with each student today, asking for email addresses for parents to help with the communication between school and home.

Thank you all for taking the time out of your busy lives to check into the class blog.  Soon, we will have reading assignments posted here for daily reading at home!  (Something for all of us to look forward to!)

Mr. Aubrey

An Update on Skating…

I have been informed that bike helmets are no longer good enough head protection on the ice during our skating time.

Because of this, we may need to share helmets.  I know that we will have almost enough to go around between Ms. Knelson’s class and ours, but I would like you to understand that we may be in a position that will require us to rotate through the helmets.  Should you require any more clarification on this, please get in touch with me by email, or at the school.

What is required on your head is a ski/snowboard helmet, or a hockey helmet.  These can be purchased at sports stores, or I have also seen them at Canadian Tire and Walmart.

If you are a parent, helping us with skating on Tuesday, we are on the ice from 1:00pm until 2:00pm.  This means that we will be leaving Century at about 12:25.

Looking forward to getting on the ice and watching everybody improve their skating skills!

Mr. Aubrey.

Oops…

Wow!  Day two of our class blog, and already I am behind.  I guess we were all a little excited about Halloween last night.  I hope that you all had a great evening full of fun, and maybe a little candy.  Please limit the amount of candy that is brought into school.  If candy becomes a distraction to anyone, then we will have to ‘ban’ it from the class.  Candy is only to be eaten at nutrition break (anyone else find that a little counter-intuitive? – candy during nutrition break? ;-) Candy is not to be eaten during class time or outside during recess.

Homework will be posted on the blog tonight, along with some more information under the important dates section.

Thanks for dropping by.

Mr. Aubrey
